Jamaica - No Problem!

Going to Jamaica was an adventure. We had a group of 27 people in our party. This was a real party. The food was excellent and really tasty. We stayed at the RIU Ocho Rios Resort. This resort was all inclusive, drinks and food—the temptation to go overboard on food and drinks was always present but I was able to contain myself while still enjoying all that Jamaica had to offer. Every morning I did my workout enough to build an appetite and then burn the calories later at the beach or the pool by participating in the water aerobics, beach volleyball, etc. I made it a point to stay active if I was going to enjoy that great Jamaican food. This may not seem like much but I was able to lose ½ a pound while on vacation. In days past, I would have gained more like 5 pounds. So all in all, I am very proud that I did not gain any weight while enjoying my vacation. I would recommend that anyone that goes to Jamaica should do the Dunn’s River tour combined with snorkeling and the boat ride.

Going to Jamaica

Another 1.8 pounds just disappeared. I know I keep saying how great it is, but that’s how I feel! I feel like everything is so much easier for me now–activities, exercise, housework, and taking care of my granddaughter, who is three. I am enjoying my life more than ever. Now, going to restaurants is a pleasure. I know what to eat so I can feel satisfied. It’s a pleasure going to family affairs. I have the willpower to eat only what I want and not get pressured into eating what I don’t want. And the reason I have such willpower is simple: When I look into the mirror, I like what I see. It is now 13.8 pounds since I started Weight Watcher’s weight loss plan and I’m still counting! I have a trip to Jamaica coming up for my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. The whole family is going and it’s going to be–what else?–great! I’m looking forward to wearing some clothes I haven’t put on in years, and buying some new ones, too. Food-wise, I know there’s nothing I can’t handle. Portion control puts you in control. Thank goodness for the Weight Watcher’s point system. Eat what you want and still lose weight. What could be easier? More on my trip coming up!

Feeling Great

Hey, I’m really feeling great! I have lost an additional 1.2 pounds this week. I am feeling great—not good—great about myself! I have been able to keep a diet for eight weeks and it shows. I have gone one pant size. Today, I tried on a pair of pants that did not fit last summer and, amazingly enough, it fit. It’s great when my family and friends tell me how good I look. I feel young and confident, like I can do anything. It’s amazing what losing weight can do for your self-esteem. I am within sight of reaching my target weight so I really have to push for the next couple of weeks. Twelve pounds lighter and still counting…Thanks, Weight Watcher’s…

Spinning Like a Top

On July 4th, I started the day with a spinning class which has you on a stationary bike for an hour pushing yourself at different levels of resistance. Yes, it’s hard, but it’s rewarding, too. I remember when I first started doing these spinning classes, I was so out of breath at times I thought I’d pass out and fall off the bike. Later that day, I went to a barbeque where I was able to enjoy eating everything I wanted. I just limited my portions. (Yup, Weight Watcher’s is really working, people!) The next day I weighed in at 2.6 pounds less. Wow! I’ve found that when I eat food with the points that are assigned to me for the week, in conjunction with exercise, I lose more. Exercising has become a big part of my diet. I work out for 40 minutes every day at lunch time; twice a week I do boot camp and take a spinning class. In our Weight Watcher’s weekly meetings, they encourage us to eat healthy and exercise. I know it may sound corny, but I feel so much more in tune with my body after losing 10.8 pounds. I have more energy and the motivation to continue to lose more.

4th of July Weekend 07/08/08

This 4th of July weekend, it was very difficult for me to be on a diet due to all the parties and barbecues I had to attend. But I was able to work with the Flex Plan that Weight Watchers designed for me. This plan allocates points allowed per day. Each particular food group is awarded a certain amount of points. The points are determined by your weight, height, gender and daily activities (exercise, walking, etc). The beauty of this plan is that it does not limit what foods you can eat. What it does, essentially, is limit the portions of food you can have. For instance, being Hispanic, I like to eat rice and beans, fried plantains (Can you believe that?) and fruits. The plan does not prevent me from eating the same things that my family likes to eat so this makes it easy when I am visiting family or cooking for my friends. I try to work out five days a week so that I can gain extra points so that I can enjoy the weekends at various restaurants and parties. This is not a very hard diet to follow being that it is fairly flexible and effective. Good news, after the weekend was over, I was still able to maintain my weight -- This is a big accomplishment.

My first blog entry 7/02/2008

Last summer I went to a family barbecue and mostly everyone that was there commented on how big my stomach was. Someone even said I looked pregnant. That's when I decided to go and see a plastic surgeon in the Domincan Republic (DR). Over the years, I’ve tried different diets and none worked for me. When I came back from DR, I commented to a co-worker that I had to lose 10 to 15 pounds for the doctor to perform the surgery. She told me she had just started Weight Watchers because she had to lose weight for health reasons. I told her I'd join so we can support each other. We go every Saturday to the weigh-in and meetings. It's a great way to share stories and get motivated to continue to do well. It's really hard to go on a diet in the summer because there are so many social events and barbecues. Latin food is very good and also very fattening and my family doesn't believe in diets so it's very hard to said no to them. My immediate family is very supportive and they are very proud of me. I have lost 10.2 pounds in six weeks, with very little change in the foods I eat. One big difference is that I now eat smaller portions. The program I use is the Weight Watcher Flex Plan. It assigns points to different foods and allows you a certain amount of points a day to control and change your eating habits.
